physiotherapy

After an initial assessment, your physiotherapist will come up with a treatment plan for you. Follow-up treatments will vary in number, duration and frequency depending on the patient.
Each patient is unique, so we believe in unique treatment plans. There may be a variety of techniques used including any of the services listed below.

All of our physiotherapy is carried out solely by the physiotherapist that assesses you, ensuring continuation of care and constant re-evaluation.

exercise therapy

The cornerstone of the physiotherapy profession is exercise. We are here to guide you through a tailored exercise program both in clinic and given for home.
Exercises could include stretching or strengthening, with goals being improving strength and stability, correcting imbalances, guiding the body through novel
movements, encouraging relaxation, or injury prevention to name just a few.

manual therapy

Manual therapy essentially encompasses the hands-on techniques used in physiotherapy. Soft tissue therapy includes releasing and relieving tension in muscles through massage, trigger pointing, active muscle release, stretching, etc. This typically goes hand-in-hand with joint mobilizations, which are hands-on movements designed to move a particular joint into a range that may be restricted or painful
in order to improve ROM and pain!

acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of treatment stemming from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  The TCM theory is that in addition to our system of veins and arteries, and the nervous system, we also have a system
of energy flow through the body.  This energy travels along meridians or pathways and pain is caused by a blockage or imbalance of that energy flow.  Insertion of very fine needles at specific places along these meridians can improve energy flow, reduce pain and promote healing.

From a more ‘western’ medicine perspective, the meridians often correspond with specific areas of the nervous system, and insertion of the needle stimulates the nervous system to increase blood flow to the region, stimulates the immune response, and can help with muscle relaxation.  Acupuncture is typically used in the treatment of headaches or migraines, neck or back pain, referred pain such as sciatica, osteoarthritis, and chronic soft tissue injuries such as frozen shoulder, tendonitis or epicondylitis.

Acupuncture by a physiotherapist may not be performed on someone that is pregnant, has uncontrolled epilepsy, or has a bleeding disorder.  It may be used with caution if you are diabetic or taking blood thinners.

Acupuncture by a physiotherapist falls within our scope of practice, but it is not always covered by extended healthcare plans.  So it is a good idea to check the wording of your policy to see what they cover.

concussion rehab

We are able to treat concussions at any stage, whether it be acute or chronic. Each concussion patient is unique, so treatment is also unique, but may include vestibular treatment, neck
and upper back treatment, treatment for vision issues, and treatment for physiological disturbances to name a few. The goal is to get you back to school, work, play and daily life as quickly as we can.

vestibular rehab

Vestibular rehab can be useful for acute vestibular issues, such as BPPV, or more longstanding vestibular issues such as balance loss at any age.
Treatment may include manoeuvres to correct BPPV, balance training, neck treatment, and habituation exercises to name a few.

taping

Taping is a non-invasive, inexpensive way to help guide or support your body through the healing process. At Muskoka MVMT we use a variety of types of tape to treat a variety of issues.
Tape may be used to stabilize a joint, reinforce a movement or posture, or provide proprioception amongst other things.

shockwave therapy

Radial Shockwave Therapy is an effective modality that applies a series of high-pressure mechanical shockwaves to your muscles or tendons through a device powered by compressed air.
Shockwave is mainly applied to chronic tissue injuries, but also has use with more acute injuries. The goal is to accelerate tissue healing by formation of new blood vessels, re-initiation
of the body’s natural inflammatory response, and stimulation of collagen formation for tissue healing.  It can also break up areas of calcification and release trigger points.
Overall, it is a great tool in the clinic that we use in conjunction with other therapy techniques. There is no additional charge for shockwave therapy.

Common conditions treated by shockwave:

• Plantar fasciitis

• Chronic tendon injuries including tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, and rotator cuff tendinopathy

• Calcified tenons

• Shin splints
